Physiognomy: The Arts and Sciences of the Face 1500-1850
The History of Physiognomy Website is run by the international network 'Physiognomy: The Arts and Sciences of the Face, 1500-1850’, established in 2007 and based in the History Department of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The international network is supported until 2010 by an ‘Academic Collaboration – International Network’ grant from the Leverhulme Trust. The International Network’s Principal Investigator is Professor Colin Jones (QMUL). Professor Nadeije Laneyrie-Dagen (École Normale Supérieure, Paris) and Professor Lina Bolzoni (Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa) are Co-investigators. The network seeks to explore the history of the physiognomy in Europe in an interdisciplinary manner. The first phase of our activities is the period running roughly from the Renaissance until the emergence of Darwinism, in the middle of the nineteenth century. Subsequently, we hope to extend the boundaries of the investigation to periods both before and after this date, and to non-European physiognomical traditions.
