Honer Acousitc Guitar

Honer Acoustic

Built sometime in the early 60's. I bought this guitar off of my uncle for £50. He reckons he was never able to get a decent tone from it. I think he was sitting in an acoustically bad part of his sitting room when he played it. It has quite a high action and is not the easiest to play but it does sound good, in a way that 40 years of mellowing allows.

A genius ebay purchase. This guitar is pretty cheap, but a stunning example of the overall quality of guitars made in China now. Very playable with a lovely throaty jangle sound that only a solid block of wood and P90's provide.

Ebay again, I will be bankrupted by ebay one day. As the cruiser above a stunning example of how much things have improved in terms of quality from China. A solid block of wood and a couple of mini humbuckers provide a nice juicy bluesy sound, not to hot, not to twangy, just right.

Fender Jaguar

Fender Jaguar

I bought this guitar second hand from a shop in Gloucester, managed to get a good deal too as the tremolo bar was missing. Jaguars generally have quite feeble pick ups and when I got it I soon realised that mine had gone microphonic. This was easily rectified with a couple of SJAG2-STD pickups from Seymour Duncan. Now it has extra poke but still has that classic surf sound and brittle sustain that Jags are well known for. I love the short scale too, allows for some serious note bending.

Fender Jazzmaster

Fender Jazzmaster

A recent addition to the fold from Macairis musical instruments on Charing Cross Road, and what a good addition it is! Dinosaur Jr. are one of my favourite bands so a jazzmaster is a must really. I don't care what anyone says about these guitars, the tremolo is fantastic and the bridge, well ok it does like to start falling apart, but a little bit of super glue dotted here and there and all is well. This guitar is raucous, the P90's really provide some kick and the neck is sublime.

Squier P-Bass Special Edition

Squier P-Bass Special Edition

Would you believe another ebay purchase? This is a special addition p-bass which has an extra jazz bass pick up. This is a good combination. There is the brutal thump of the p-bass pickup and the smoother, more subtle singing of the j-bass pickup. Yes it is a left handed bass that has been moded to play right handed. I didn't do this, the guy who owned it before me did. He is a big fan of S*M*A*S*H (as am I) whose bass player basically plays a right handed bass upside down.

Epiphone Les Paul

Epiphone Les Paul

A fine purchase from Guitartek of Woking. A lot of people doubt the quality of Epiphone instruments and would rather have Gibsons and the like. I have to say I disagree; I think that the quality of epiphones can be extremely variable, but if you find a good one, well you find a great one. This is such a guitar. Having played a proper gibson les paul I have to say I am hard pushed to find that much of a difference, the epiphone is lighter, does not mush up with high gain so much and about £800 cheaper. What is not to love!

Gould Stormbird

Gould Stormbird

From Twang Guitars of Penge. This is a charming guitar that makes an almighty roar on full pelt but the delicate sound of glass when played quietly. It needed a decent set up when I bought it as it was barely playable from the box, but boy how playable it was once I'd had a go at it with some tools!

Indie IRK5 Ricky Copy

Indie IRK5 Ricky Copy

Bargain deal from Music Warehouse of Colchester. I've never had the chance to play a proper Ricky 330, I doubt I'll get much chance as they cost in excess of £1100! Lou, the chap at the shop reckons it sounds as good as a proper Ricky, I'm not convinced of that exactly but this guitar has more so much jangle it is untrue. Just perfect for open chords and appregeos.

Epiphone SG400

Epiphone SG-400

See my previous comments on Epiphone guitars. This guitar is great, predictably it came via ebay. It is a rock guitar for rock music. Lighter and not as full bodied as say a les Paul, but with hotter output than a strat, this guitar is just so versatile, capable of searing solos, thumping single note muted rhythm parts or delicate delay loaded picking. I mainly use it for recording but am sure to gig it sooner or later.

Squier Strat

Squier Strat

This guitar was one of my first, I must have had it about 15 years. I bought it off a friend who decided guitar was not for him. Glad I did. All of the Strat tones are present and correct and this guitar compares very favourably with some American made strats I've had a chance to play over the years. Oh and I painted it Silver, mainly because Ican't stand white guitars they just look so sterile.

Squier Telecaster

Squier Telecaster

A workhorse of a guitar, full of the characteristic bite and twang of a tele. I got this one from Sound Control in Newcastle in the late 90's. It was the first guitar I ever owned with a sunburst finish, I saw it and fell in love. At one point it got covered in stickers, but I decided that was wrong and so took em all off and gave it a good polish. Now it gets used mainly for recording and twiddling when I am sat in front of the TV of an evening.

A P90 loaded Tele, what could be better? Very little is a short answer. This guitar can basically do anything except very heavy stuff. It has a great jangle factor and can be very ballsy when the gain is increased. Gets used mainly for recording, will gig it sooner or later.
