Thermochromic means "changing with temperature". Thermochromic coatings are usually variable heat mirrors whose infra-red optical properties change dramatically with temperature without any change in the visible part of the spectrum.

In the schematic above the left represents a cold day where all solar heat is allowed into the room to help maintain a comfortable temperature for the people inside without the use of heating.

The right hand side represents a warm day where the infra-red optical properties of the film have changed and this part of the solar spectrum is being reflected away from the building; as such the room does not experience this solar radiation and warm up - a comfortable temperature is maintained without the need for air conditioning.
